New Harry Hoag Elementary physical education teacher brings experience and excitement

“I like helping students learn new things and seeing the satisfaction they get when they develop a new skill.”

That’s how new Harry Hoag Elementary School physical education teacher Charles “Chuck” Goebel approaches his job. Mr. Goebel said his “great” experiences taking physical education in high school influenced him to become a teacher. Goebel

“I had two young PE teachers who were just starting off their careers and they were really nice guys and it just seemed natural to go into that field,” he said. “I also love sports and it felt natural to do this.”

A native of Johnstown, Mr. Goebel received a bachelor’s of science degree in physical education and master’s in elementary education from the University of New Hampshire. From there, he went on to teach in New Hampshire, Johnstown, at an alternative high school, and most recently, at the Montgomery County jail.

Mr. Goebel said he’s new to the Fort Plain Central School District, but already likes it because of its small feel and friendly and helpful people. He describes his teaching style as “laid back and fun,” and is looking to build the students’ fitness skills and agility, in addition to skills like using a bat and throwing a ball.

“We will basically follow the calendar this year and work on team skills. We’ll play soccer, basketball and floor hockey. And in the spring, we’ll play baseball and track and field,” he said.

He said he’s thrilled to be back teaching elementary students because that’s where his passion is.

“That’s my favorite age. I love the enthusiasm kids bring to class. You see kids in the hallway and their eyes light up when they see you,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to working here.”
