Fort Plain Pacers resumed on November 1
Fitness center at the Jr. /Sr. High School also re-opened to public on Nov. 4

Thanks to the continued support from BlueShield of Northeastern New York, and Stewarts, the Fort Plain Pacers walking program resumed Nov. 1, and the fitness center at the Jr. /Sr. High School re-opened to the public starting on Nov. 4.

The Pacers — a year-round walking program at Harry Hoag Elementary School — will run from 4:30-7 p.m. each school day through March 30. The goal of the program is to help boost physical activity for local residents and offer safe and affordable walking options during the winter. BlueShield also plans to offer a schedule of wellness programs.

“At BlueShield, we believe everyone has the ability to make healthy changes,” Brian O’Grady, vice president, said. “By taking our message out in the community, we believe we can inspire a movement – one that motivates all residents to live healthier, happier lives.”

Residents can register for the Pacers program and get an ID card for $5 at the district office.

“We began this program in 2007,” said Fort Plain Superintendent Douglas Burton. “The District is delighted to continue the program this winter and ensure that our residents can walk in a warm, safe environment. Many of our walkers live with chronic illnesses such as diabetes and arthritis, so healthy walking is important to them.”

The fitness center at the Jr. /Sr. High School will be open from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on school days. The first week will be free, but membership is $20 a month for all residents. The fitness center was opened as part of the district’s recent capital project and features circuit training equipment, free weights, cardiovascular equipment and training.

District leaders and representatives from BlueShield plan on hosting a kick-off event at Harry Hoag Elementary School in early November. For details on the Pacers program or the fitness center, please contact the district office at (518) 993-4000.
