Harry Hoag Elementary receives $2,000 Target
grant for reading programs
Harry Hoag Elementary school recently received
a $2,000 grant from Target, for a “Reading around the Seasons”
program aimed at teaching and modeling family literacy skills in a
fun and relaxed setting.
The money will be used for staffing, books and
craft supplies for four seasonal family reading nights for students
in grades K-3.
School librarian Mary VanPatten will lead four
seasonal family reading nights for 50 children and their parents.
The seasonal reading nights will focus on these holidays/themes:
Halloween, winter, Earth Day/Spring, and summer.
The dates for the events have not been
determined yet, but will be announced in the district newsletter and
on the website.
“This will be a way to engage parents and help
them encourage early reading in their children,” she said.
Students attending will also receive a
seasonal book to bring home and read. Appropriate titles will be
selected for the families and the children. The library staff plans
to read stories and model behavior that parents can use to engage
their children in reading at home.
