Fort Plain CSD receives $4,500 Muscle Milk grant to support soccer

CytoSport, the company who makes the protein beverage Muscle Milk, recently awarded the Fort Plain Central School District a $4,500 grant for soccer uniforms and the Support for Soccer Fund. The district was one of 21 others around the country who received a total of $250,000 in grants for athletic programs as part of the 2013 Muscle Milk Recovery Grant Program.

In its second year, the program accepted applications from May through November and received more than 600 submissions from high schools in need across the country.

Fort Plain soccer coach Matt Heiser, who co-wrote the grant application, noted its popularity in the district, saying approximately 100 out of the district’s 800 students participate.

“…The soccer program is in need of equipment including new soccer goals, uniforms and other necessities. Also as a coach and teacher, I have seen a talented players, whose family’s finances were devastated by the flood, choose not to play soccer because his family couldn’t afford the required annual expenses for equipment such as cleats and other items the school does not provide,” Mr. Heiser wrote in the grant request.

“It is for this reason that part of the Muscle Milk funding will be used to set up a student sports fund Support for Soccer (SFS), to help students who want to play but whose families might not have the means to afford the equipment or costs associated with the sport.”

The Muscle Milk grants vary in the amount awarded based on each school’s requested need and will be provided to the school to fund their revitalizations as outlined in their application.
