After
only 45-minute workshops, three groups of Harry Hoag Elementary
School students performed on steel drums for their teachers and
fellow students. Jim Traglia, John Joseph, and Mike DeMarco, who
comprise Carribean Steel Drum Sounds, instructed the students before
their concert. The fourth grade steel drum band played La Bamba,
fifth graders played Tequila, and sixth graders played theme from
the Lion King. The program was part of a partnership between the
Fort Plain Central School District and Mohawk Valley Center for the
Arts to enhance the district’s fine arts program.

Flagpole dedicated
The new flagpole in front
of Harry Hoag Elementary School was dedicated on Flag Day,
June 14. American Legion representatives and honor guard, Fort Plain
Mayor Guy Barton, and members of the public were on hand for the
dedication along with students and staff of the elementary School.
Superintendent of Schools Douglas Burton spoke about the history of
Flag Day and the importance of the flag as a symbol of our country
and in remembrance of those who have fought to maintain our freedom.
Harry Hoag Student Council President Caitlyn Porter led the Pledge
of Allegiance and students sang “You’re a Grand Ol’ Flag” and
“America the Beautiful.” The flagpole replaces one that had been in
place for 28 years. The American Legion donated the American flag
and a flag to remember prisoners of war and those missing in action.
