Harry Hoag Elementary receives $2,000 Arts in Education Grant from Target

Thanks to a $2,000 Arts in Education Grant awarded by Target, Harry Hoag Elementary school plans to bring in musician Dave Ruchs for a two-day residency this year. Ruchs performs historical songs of the region during his program called, “Regional History Comes Alive.”

He also performed at the school in 2010 and during the 2011-12 school year.

According to the grant application, the program “will create a unique curriculum for Harry Hoag Elementary School based on the historical connections the Fort Plain community has to its land and history. Dave has previously visited the school and presented his Erie Canal workshop and a workshop on Native American music and lore that students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed. With his guitar, banjo and jaw harp, Dave will lead students on a fun-filled musical journey into New York State history. Students will become active participants in their own learning as they sing along, respond to questions and act out songs.”

The school district also received a $1,000 grant from Wal-Mart that district officials plan to use on the fitness center at Fort Plain Jr. /Sr. High School.
