Harry Hoag students raise $3,105 for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital during math-a-thon

A total of 63 students in grades 1-6 at Harry Hoag Elementary School raised $3,105 for the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital during a recent math-a-thon program. Since 1990, Fort Plain students have raised $90,026. Math

The goal of the event is to raise funds to donate to the hospital. After watching a video, the students receive a book with math problems to solve and then collect sponsorship donations from the community.

According to St. Jude’s, the goal of the program is to teach students the importance of helping others while improving core math skills. And that’s why fifth grade teacher and math-a-thon coordinator Kim Lathers wanted students to participate.

“I wanted kids to realize there are a lot of less fortunate kids out there stricken with life-threatening diseases,” he said. “This hospital helps people who don’t have money, and I wanted our students to know they can help out.”
