Fort Plain High School students collect tabs
for Shriners Hospitals for Children
The Fort Plain branch of the National Honor
Society and math teacher Debbie Waner donated 14 cases of aluminum
tabs (or approximately 433,000 tabs) on Tuesday, May 22, to Ziyara
Shriners of Utica to buy walkers, braces and other medical equipment
for children.
Ziyara Shriners supports Shriners Hospitals
for Children, which provides free orthopedic and burn care to
children under 18.
“This is my way of giving something back,”
said Mrs. Waner. “This helps kids with disabilities to get their
walkers and wheelchairs and braces.”
Representatives from Ziyara Shriners came to
the school and talked to members of the NHS about what they do.
The students began collecting the tabs – which
come off cans - last year, and Mrs. Waner also collected tabs at her
house.
“The students were happy to do this,” she
added.
