Four families participate in Family Math Night
at Fort Plain Jr./Sr. High School
Four families of students in eighth grade at
Fort Plain Jr./Sr. High School participated in the second Family
Math Night in the district on Nov. 13.
The goal of the evening was to reinforce math
skills in a fun environment.
The families solved logic problems, played
games and worked with three-dimensional figures. Math teacher Susan
Summerfield also talked to parents about the new state math
assessments, and the Common Core State Standards and how they apply
“They’ve heard about Common Core, and I
explained how we are going more in depth with some of the topics,”
she said. “I also gave them a pamphlet and some links to math
websites for extra help.”
The district’s first Family Math Night was
held on Wednesday, Oct. 23 for families in the Life Skill's
classroom. Three families participated in the evening which began
with dinner prepared by the students.
Following dinner, the families played problem
solving games and participated in other activities. Families were
then sent home with games and manipulatives to reinforce math
Many of the games and activities used for the
evening were provided to families as a result of a grant awarded to
Mrs. Summerfield, who submitted a request to donorschoose.org, an
internet site dedicated to providing teachers with materials to
support classroom learning.
