Smith, Vance awarded  Montgomery County
Stop DWI scholarships       

     Seniors Kyle Smith and Tiffany Vance have been awarded inaugural $1,000 Montgomery County Stop DWI Scholarships.
        Money for the scholarship was raised at the 2007 Stop DWI Golf Tournament. With support and approval of Chairman Vito Greco and the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors, the golf tournament committee decided to develop a scholarship program for two graduating seniors from each of the five high schools in the county. The major faPhoto of Kyle Smith Jennifer Petteys and Tiffany Vancector in awarding the scholarships was the quality of essays submitted by students on one of two topics: the zero tolerance law for driving while intoxicated or the social host law recently enacted by the Board of Supervisors.
        Smith, son of Deborah Johnson and Dennis Smith will attend Springfield College as a biology education major. Vance, daughter of Russell and Deborah Vance will attend Herkimer County Community College and major in Childhood Education.
      Montgomery County Stop DWI Coordinator Jennifer Petteys presented the scholarship awards to Smith and Vance.

Cutspec awarded lottery scholarship

         Fort Plain High School Principal Deborah Larrabee has announced that Senior Adam Cutspec has been awPhoto of Adam Cutspecarded a $5,000 New York Lottery 2008 Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship. Son of Robyn Cutspec and the late William Cutspec, Adam will attend the State University of New York at Albany in the fall and major in History.
         To be eligible to receive the Lottery Scholarship, students must demonstrate at least a “B” average, be active in their community and plan to attend a New York-accredited college, university, trade school or community college. Scholarship monies are paid directly to the school of the recipient’s choice. Scholarship funds are paid in increments of $1,250 per year. Since the program’s debut in 2000, the Lottery has awarded about 9,000 Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarships totaling $38 million.
        “Adam is role model for his peers. He is a well rounded individual and a natural leader. We are proud of him and all he has accomplished at Fort Plain Jr-Sr. High School,” Larrabee said.

 Many awards and scholarships announced 

    Numerous prizes, awards and scholarships were given to deserving students at Undergraduate Award Night June 3 and Senior Awards Night June 10. Both events were held in the Junior/Senior High School Auditorium.
     These awards would not be possible without the generosity shown by individuals and organizations in the Fort Plain area. To all those who contributed, the students of Fort Plain High School sincerely thank you.

Smith attends leadership conference

       Sophomore Ashley Smith recently attended the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute iPhoto of Ashley Smithn Troy. The conference is designed for high school sophomores to recognize their leadership talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders in their homes, schools, workplace, and community.
         Smith attended leadership seminars and participated in a “Free Market Challenge,” a simulation whereby students sold a product and learned how to effectively manage their finances.
         Actor Hugh O’Brian founded HOBY in 1958. Seventy HOBY conferences are held throughout the United States each year. About 300 students from schools across the Northeast attended the conference at RPI.

Women’s Photo of students in Seneca FallsDay Out

On May 23, 30 students took a “Women’s Day Out” with a tour of the Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls. The trip was part of the OK2XL program at the High School. The students also visited Wesley Chapel, where the first women’s rights convention was held in 1848, and the Seneca Falls home of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, one of the organizers conventions organizers. Stanton was born in Johnstown.
