Hilltoppers learn and have fun at Disney
World Sports Complex |
A trip
to remember
After a year of major
fundraising efforts, the Fort Plain Hilltopper Varsity Baseball team
boarded a plane on April 10 to play at the Disney Wide World of
Sports Complex in sunny Florida.
Throughout the next eight days, the team played eight
games, practiced once a day, and enjoyed the attractions of Disney
World. All games were unofficial contests - with Duluth East High
School, Minnesota; Corcoran High School, Syracuse; Caledonia-Mumford,
Rochester; Niagara Wheatfield High, Niagara; Wethersfield High
School, Connecticut; Penn Yan Academy, Penn Yan; Gates-Chili High,
Rochester; and The Morgan School, Connecticut.
“All of these schools were bigger than Fort
Plain’s Class C status but that didn’t matter to the Toppers, who
made the most of this experience and played top caliber baseball,”
said assistant coach Dale Smith. “The trip certainly was an awesome
experience for the 19 young men who went and will yield long lasting
memories. The team is now focused on the WAC league schedule in
front of them as they head into May. In the words of one
player, the trip was fantastic, but we need to take care of business
now that we’re home.”
Coach Craig Phillips said the trip would
not have been possible without the widespread community support the
Hilltoppers received. Fundraisers included a scrap metal drive, golf
tournament, bowling tournament, team calendar, horseshoe tournament
and barbecue, and pancake supper. “A lot of people contributed to
make this trip a reality: players, coaches, faculty and staff,
parents, and the many community members who supported our
fundraisers. We thank them all for making this trip possible,”
Phillips said.
