Merger Feasibility Study and Vote

The Canajoharie and Fort Plain central school districts conducted a merger study in 2024. The districts received state aid to help cover the cost of the study, and applied for grant funding to cover the remainder of the costs.

This study, approved by each district’s Board of Education, is a required first step any time two or more districts are considering a merger. The study began in June of 2024 and culminated in January 2025 with a presentation of the findings to the communities.

On Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025, the boards of education jointly decided the process should move forward after reviewing the study.

On March 6, 2025, residents in the Canajoharie and Fort Plain central school districts put an end to the merger process by voting against the merger in an advisory referendum/straw poll vote.

The measure was rejected with a vote of 318 to 286 in Canajoharie and 206 to 191 in Fort Plain.

The boards of education have one year to revisit the question of a merger and put the question to the community for a revote if they choose to do so. After that time, a new study would be needed if the districts wish to reconsider a potential merger.
